BS 8110 — continuous beam (Table 3.5)

Uniformly loaded continuous rectangular, T or L beam: moments and shears from Table 3.5 coefficients, flexure at end span, first support, interior span and interior support, span/d and links.

Tool: Education preview · Lesson: In preparation · Example: Built awaiting check · Workbook: Not applicable · Assessment: Not started

Outstanding before release: Engineering checker to verify clause mapping against BS 8110-1 and sign off v0.1.0. Cross-checked against TCC RCC95 Continuous Beams (Tables) (see evidence).

Calculator

Purpose: Design of a continuous beam of three or more approximately equal spans with uniform load, using the moment and shear coefficients of Table 3.5.

Model: Moments F·L × coefficient (F = total ULS load on a span): end span 0.09, first interior support −0.11, interior span 0.07, interior support −0.08; shears 0.45F, 0.60F, 0.55F. Flange in compression at spans; web width at supports.

Units: N, mm, kN, kNm; stresses in N/mm² Ranges: fcu 25–50 N/mm²; fy 250 / 460 / 500; βb 0.7–1.0

Equations: F = (1.4gk + 1.6qk)L ; M = coefficient × F × L ; As by 3.4.4.4 (K′ = 0.156) / 3.4.4.5 for web neutral axis ; Asv/sv per Table 3.7; span/d per 3.4.6 (no credit for top steel)

Clauses: 3.4.3 & Table 3.5 (coefficients and conditions: Qk ≤ Gk, ≥ 3 spans differing ≤ 15%); 3.4.1.5 (flange width); 3.4.4.4 / 3.4.4.5; Table 3.25; 3.4.5 / Tables 3.7–3.8; 3.4.6; 3.12.11

Exercises

Assessment in preparation.

About this academy. Exercises use fictional or permission-cleared data and are simulated training, not supervised project experience. Completing modules does not confer professional registration, LTA approval or recognised Singapore working experience, and does not guarantee employment. Calculators produce preliminary outputs for learning and checking; they are not PE-endorsed designs. Official requirements are in the documents published by LTA and other issuing bodies — always use the edition your contract specifies.
